My timeline so far
So I’m turning 15 in a couple of months and I just want to look back on what I did in the past decade and a half of my life just to see where I’m at right now. I’m writing this for myself, but if I pressure myself in publishing this online, I would probably take this blog post more seriously.
So here it is:
2006 — I was born on the 18th of July
2007 to 2011— I don’t really remember much but I do remember having stacks of paper and drawing cartoon characters there and asking my mom to record me drawing them since I saw a lot of people on YouTube doing them as well. This was probably the start of my obsessive love for design. Oh and I also remember playing a lot of video games on a Windows Vista laptop.
2012 to 2015 — I got an iPad! So let me summarize all the shenanigans I did with that ancient machine:
- Watching a lot of Minecraft YouTubers up until midnight
- I attempted to jailbreak my iPad multiple times because I wanted free in-app purchases on the games I have but miserably failed multiple times
- Dropped it millions of times unconsciously without telling anyone
- Played a lot of Dragon City, Minecraft, Terarria, Club Penguin, and Subway Surfers
- Created my first ever YouTube channel thinking I would go big
- Got obsessed with Instagram and Snapchat
2016 — This year was the most memorable to me. This was the year where I discovered design and coding. I was trying to make my YouTube channel go big but I saw these content creators having some badass branding so I really wanted one and installed some design apps on my phone to make a banner then I also discovered photoshop and other photo editors so I decided to make my designs there instead. And finally, I saw a lot of videos about hackers screwing up web servers so I decided to force myself to learn HTML and CSS thinking I’m the real deal, and eventually loved it even though I forced it on to myself.
2017 to 2018 — Fortnite just released so I used up the whole year practicing on my builds every day after school and on weekends. It was definitely not worth it.
2019 — This was when I discovered freelancing. I got back my love for design so I tried making a lot of them for free for content creators but when I tried emailing a creator if I could make them some animations for their channel, I unexpectedly got paid for it and I was the happiest 12-year-old alive jumping up and down on the floor. Then I continued doing it up until the end of the year. Keep in mind that “my” Laptop is suffering from all the programs I tossed at it, I was merciless to that machine.
2020 — I decided to buy a PC to have an easier time working on my craft. Although I don’t have the budget to buy a good one. So I bite the bullet and took a down payment for it and hoping I would pay it back at the end of the year. My freelance income was really low and not enough for me to cover the price of my computer but eventually, when the pandemic hit, I was able to get a stable amount clients and was able to complete the payment.
Mid 2020 — I’m not saying the in an edgy manner but I had somewhat of an existential crisis on what I’m going to do in the next coming years now that I discovered the thing I really love and want a career with, design. So I decided to myself to learn as much as possible. So with taking freelance gigs and taking courses, I took up the fields of the following: branding, product (UI/UX), illustration, motion, and also I got back my love for coding so I decided to learn how web servers work and frontend frameworks.
2021 — I got burned out with all the fields I’m working on so I decided to settle in doing motion design for the past months.
And yeah, this is a brief breakdown of how I got to what I am doing now. I never expected myself to be in this position and I am really grateful for it. And as for now, I already have three specific fields that I am really passionate about: product, motion design, illustration, and web development.
So what’s next? Well, I’m still continuing on building my career as a designer. I’m still a kid and I want to use that advantage to take as many opportunities given to me as I can.
I will definitely have more goals adding up to the list in the future but as for now, I want to focus on getting better as a designer, developer, and as well as a person.
